Tall Ships Graced Coos Bay

Bay Point Landing in Coos Bay, Oregon is an amazing place to see the great outdoors and to interact with nature and particularly the ocean and its sights. In fact, Coos Bay recently hosted two classic tall ships. Newport revoked the permit for the ships, causing the ships to dock in Coos Bay.

Tall Ships in Coos Bay

Tall ships are your classic large sailing schooners. This type of sailing vessel is associated with North America even though they were first pioneered by the Dutch. This type of ship saw most of its usage in New England and were popular in professions that favored speed and windward ability.

If you’re having trouble visualizing it, think of the classic ships featured in pirate movies. These ships were popular with pirates for the above reasons, which makes sense because they need the extra speed and agility to move quickly through docks and ports.

Lady Washington Ship

One of the vessels is known as the Lady Washington. This replica was launched on March 7, 1989 and is a full-scale replica of the original Lady Washington. The original was the first American ship to make landfall on North American west coast.

From there she plied the sea lanes between the U.S. and Asia, the first to visit Honolulu, Hong Kong, and Japan. The replica has been featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Star Trek: Generations, Once Upon a Time, and Revolution.
